The third born in a family of ten children, Shakira hails from Ttakajjunge, Masaka District. Her mother is the sole bread winner for the family. Shakira’s childhood dream was joining University, but the hopeless financial situation at home left her dream hanging in a balance. None of her elder siblings had gone beyond form four. Her face lit up when The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program at Brac offered her a scholarship that took her to Masaka Secondary school for her A’ level. She excelled in her final exams in 2014; however, she was not sure if her dream of studying at University would become a reality. Indeed, The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program at Makerere University made her dream a reality when they offered her a scholarship to join University. She is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. At the completion of the course, she will come out a trained science teacher; she hopes to use her skills to change the community by reducing the high rate of school dropouts. She will achieve this guiding and counselling the youths. She also plans to go for a health profession to extend a wide range of services to people in her community. At Makerere University, Shakira is the sitting Vice Chairperson of the Education Science Investment Move (ESIM). She is forever indebted to The MasterCard Foundation for turning around her life.
