Nasuuna Joan

GENDER: Female

PROGRAMME: Bachelor of Development Studies

COLLEGE: College of Humanities & Social Sciences

STUDY PERIOD: 2015 to 2018

Joan is the fourth born in the family of seven children.  She was raised by her single mother who was the only source of their livelihood. Using her meagre resources, her mother was able to support her through the primary and lower secondary level of education. However, after form four, the mother couldn’t afford the fees for high school, so Joan had to sit at home for an entire academic year. Through sheer luck, she was able to get a scholarship through The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program at Brac. With that scholarship she was able to join St. Marys College Lugazi for her Advanced level, and she excelled in her final exams in 2014. Luck was once again on her side, and she was offered another scholarship through The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program at Makerere University, and she was able to join Makerere University, where is currently pursuing a Bachelors in Development studies. Her ambition is to ground herself in the development sector as an expert in national and international development issues, in the hope of getting an income out of it, so that she can help needy people in her community to have access to education. She is very grateful for the generosity of The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program for enabling her to get where she is today.
