Sam is a son to the late Okao William and Mrs Jane Okao of Apac district, northern Uganda. He is the fifth among six children. He went to Arocha Primary School and was a happy child until his father passed away in 2004, leaving him and his siblings in the hands of a single mother. Life took a twist for Sam and his siblings. The mother could not cope with the demands of being the family head; later on pay all the school fees for her children. Sam’s education journey hang in a balance at this point. While he was completing his ordinary level at Aduku Secondary School, his mother fell ill, so she could not afford to pay the school fees. He was able to sit his final exams at the mercies of his Head teacher. The hope of furthering his education and attain his engineering dream, was restored when The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program at Brac offered him a Scholarship to attend ‘A’ Level from St. Mary´s College, Lugazi. He excelled in his final exams with 17 points in Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry. He was then offered another Scholarship by The MasterCard Foundation at Makerere University. Today, he is pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, at Makerere University, and he is very grateful to The MasterCard Foundation for making his dream become a reality.
