Gibson graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration at Makerere University. He is currently studying a Master’s degree in Chinese language on a Scholarship Program at Xiangtan University in China. He is a dedicated, highly motivated, flexible and a team player. He enjoys meeting new people of diverse cultures, something that has had a great impact on his interpersonal and communication skills. He believes that these are the main 21st Century skills for both individual and community growth. Gibson is interested in research around global Business, International relations, trade, cultural diversity and Chinese language. He strongly believes that promoting Chinese language is one of the best ways to promote China-Uganda bilateral relations, which will see Uganda’s Health, Transport, Technology and Business enterprises improve with a stable growing GDP and youth employment opportunities. Gloria graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Agribusiness Management. Being the first born in the family of subsistence farmers who struggled with poverty to bring her up together with her three siblings, Gloria always knew that it was her duty to set a perfect example through studying albeit the challenging circumstances. Her persistence and hard work paid off when Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at Makerere University made her dream of a becoming a professional agriculturalist come true, when they offered her a scholarship to pursue University education. She believes that she can uplift the backward forms of agriculture in her community since modern agriculture can significantly help in the fight against poverty

While at the University, she was the Class Coordinator right from year one to year three, a mark of good leadership and leadership skills. She is self-motivated, very creative and innovative in whatever she does. She is passionate about human rights, the reason she took on part time work with Uganda Human Rights Commission Soroti branch. She has inspired a lot during her time at the University through sharing her personal experiences with many. She has aspirations and determined to become a Member of Parliament in the near future to represent her home district of Bukedea. Faith has always dreamt of joining the fight for human rights and Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program has made that dream come true. She aspires to study law, so that she can establish her own law firm in order to help cub the rampant lawlessness in her community.

Faith graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Community Psychology (First Class Honors) at Makerere University. She has a burning passion for young people and works to ensure mental and wholesome well being among adolescents. She has been involved in various school outreaches which offer career guidance, counseling and mentor-ship to young people. She has a certificate in effective counseling from the College of Health Sciences, Makerere University. Faith is well grounded in project design and management. She has relative work experience having worked with TASO Uganda, an HIV/AIDS service organization as an adolescent counselor. She volunteered with Free 2 live, an NGO that works to promote mental and lifestyle well being of young people. Faith also volunteered with Global Grassroots an NGO that promotes conscious social change among young women where she mentored adolescents in school,designed and implemented a social venture tailored towards reduction of school dropouts and teenage pregnancy winning herself a grant of USD2000. She is currently volunteering as a peer mentor to a number of Scholars and other University students. She is looking for an exciting position in the field of Psychology with a lot of community engagement activities and social research. Faith is very passionate about young people. Her career prospect is to become a successful Career Guidance Counselor and help to change young people’s paths for a better future.

Gloria holds a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health Sciences from Makerere Universuyty, school of Public Health. She specialized in Public Health and she is passionate about health promotion, especially through creating awareness on prevention of communicable diseases that are endemic in the Sub-Saharan Africa. She is an enthusiastic and determined person with excellent communication, leadership and relationship building skills. While at Makerere University she served as Sports Minister at Mastercard Foundation Scholars Association, Chief Mobilizer for School of Public Health Christian Union, Chairperson and Treasurer for St. Cecilia Choir. Gloria also participated in various giveback activities which were organized by Mastercard Foundation Scholars. She spearheaded the give back project at Mulago School of the deaf by St. Cecilia Choir of Makerere University, which was meant to encourage children with disabilities in that school and also share with them some basic needs. She is so passionate about community health, she has experience in community engagement and mobilization and possesses a variety of abilities ranging from planning community activities, collecting data through interviews, to educating people and influencing them for behavior change. Gloria’s dream is to become a community health educator, so that she can give back to communities by teaching them about health living.

Jeninah graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology at Makerere University. While at the University, she honed great leadership skills, through the various leadership portfolios she held. She was the General Secretary of her Hall of residence, as well as the Rukungiri District Student’s Association. She was the Projects Coordinator of Biotechnology Society at Makerere University. Together with her fellowBio technologists, she attended a parliamentary debate on the Biotechnology Bill and made substantial contributions during the debates. The Bill was later passed into law as a result of their contribution. She led a conference for youths in Rukungiri district aimed at addressing unemployment among fresh graduates during her time of service in her Student’s Association. Jeninah is well equipped with knowledge and skills in Medical Laboratory and Health care, having worked with Reproductive Health Uganda Laboratory in Bushenyi district. She participated in helping youth understand sexual and reproductive rights. In her final year, Jeninah picked interest in the fields of Plant Pathology and Bio science, and this inspired her final year research project on using phytochemicals to prevent plant diseases, particularly the black rot disease of crucifies. Her career aspiration is to become a cancer researcher and to upgrade and study for Master’s Degree in order to be a doctor in the cancer department. Jeninah also dreams of setting up a Foundation that is dedicated to improving standards of living for needy young people, as well as advocating for girl child education.

Isaac graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree with Education. Isaac believes that being a professional teacher, provides him with a wide platform to engage and empower the young people in High School in a number of ways. This had always been his dream, he was therefore very excited when he was admitted to study for a Bachelor of Science with Education at Makerere University; thanks to Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program. While at the University, Isaac didn’t not wait to graduate in order to begin engaging and empowering the young people in High School. Right from year one, he began teaching on part time during school time and during his vacations. He attended several capacity building workshops and seminars organized by the Scholars Program which equipped him with several soft skills such as leadership, mentoring, computer and communication skills. This helped him to take some leadership position within Makerere University as class coordinator, Deputy Disciplinary minister in Nkrumah hall and a number of other leadership portfolios within the University. Isaac aspires to become an entrepreneur in the education sector, where he hopes to establish his own school which will help educate the disadvantaged young people in his community.

Evelyn holds a Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, majoring in Women and Gender Studies. She has excellent interpersonal skills, flexibility and a great team player. During her stay at the University, she engaged in a number of work related internships to acquire requisite experience. She worked with Action Africa Help International, an NGO based in her home district of Kotido. Here, she engaged in humanitarian work which added to her knowledge on giving back to community, which she is passionate about. She is very active in her community and has participated in many community programs such as tree planting, Youth Livelihood Programs and Uganda Change Agent Association, where she attained skills of self-reliance through trainings and group savings. In these programs, she served as a member, Coordinator and Translator. She is very passionate about women and gender issues, rights of people living with disabilities and empowering vulnerable and marginalized groups in the society. Agatha graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Sciences. While at Makerere University, she exhibited tremendous growth academically and socially. She also gained significant experience in the world of work, having worked with Napak District Local Government-Department of Administration and Community Development office during her internship. During this period, she gained exposure and acquired a number of skills in different areas, because of the activities she engaged in. While working with Napak local government, Agatha was responsible for; organizing and participating in ‘go-back-to School’ campaigns, where she helped create awareness among young people in Karamoja sub-region about the importance of attending school. She was also responsible for monitoring of government programs in the district, records management, community mobilization and advocacy on community based services, sensitizing communities on various issues that affect them; such as sanitation, report writing, and recording minutes during meetings. Agatha has also worked with Uganda’s Electoral Commission as a polling Assistant, where among other duties she was responsible for ensuring that there was observance of law and order at the polling station, filling in the necessary forms at the opening of the polling station, and at the end of electoral period, as well as ensuring utmost honesty when presenting results. She also worked with Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) as an enumerator during the 2014 Uganda census. Her career aspiration is to become a Social worker and also a Business Woman, in order to work with the community as well as make contribution towards economic development of Karamoja sub-region.

Barbara holds a Bachelor’s degree in Animal Production Technology and Management. She is passionate about, writing, nature and discovery which fit well into her course and career aspirations. Babra made good use of her time at the university and got various skills from her internships with the National Animal Genetic Resource Center and Data Bank, and the National Livestock Resource Research Center. She is very skilled in animal breeding and selection, feed rationing and formulation(swine), farm animal management practices, carrying out post mortem ,teaching and training people in these areas, treating sick animals, dairy health management, breeding, dairy feed formulation and feeding, laboratory feed analysis, hatchery and brooder management, pasture establishment and feed conservation. Aside from her course requirements, Babra volunteered as the chief editor of the AlumNet magazine, which enhanced her writing skills. She is also passionate about humanitarian service and has engaged in various community giveback activities organized by the scholars’ community, her church and including one that she organized. Her career aspiration is to be a lead researcher in fields of breeding technology and nutrition and hopes to further her studies to achieve this.

One of her key highlights as a scholar was attending the Baobab Summit in Johannesburg, south Africa in 2017 and doing her internship with Civil Aviation Authority Uganda. Both experiences helped her gain practical knowledge about Business Administration. Geoffrey is passionate about giving back to his community, together with his colleagues, they started a social venture dubbed “Go and Study Project -Kakumiro” aimed at mobilizing funds and discovering education opportunities for the needy high school students to access University education. Abdul Rahman is a graduate of Mechanical Engineering at Makerere University. Kawsar holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Chemistry. While at the University, she exhibited strong leadership skills, serving as Finance Minister of her University Hall of residence. She was the General Secretary of Makerere University Chemical Society, where she left a great impact, when she introduced the Science Expo, an initiative that enabled the society to raise money to purchase a router for the Chemistry department to ease research. She has experience in her career path through her internship experience with Cipla Quality Chemicals, one of the biggest pharmaceutical companies in Uganda. During the internship, she was placed under the department of Quality control and Water and Waste Treatment department. This gave her an opportunity to head an intern project that dealt with safer ways of avoiding scaling without having a negative effect on the environment. In her final year, she headed an environmental project that dealt with production of bio-fluids. This was a solution to the fast depletion of petroleum reserves in the country. Her commitment to give back to the community is quite strong as she participated in the community service done by Somali youth at her camp, to help the new refugees settle in as well as encouraging the youth to study. She wants to utilize her education and leadership skills to impact her society. She plans to put up her own industry in order to support young people as part of the solution to youth unemployment.

While at the University, she actively participated in give back activities organized by the scholar’s program and also held several leadership positions. She did her internship with Centenary Bank where she was able to educate the community about cancer outbreak during the Rotary Cancer Run, in association with
Centenary Bank. She also organised talks for primary and secondary students to stay in school and avoid early pregnancies. While in her second year at Makerere University, she participated in the entrepreneurship exhibitions, where she got an opportunity to expose her skills in craft industry. She attended the summer leadership
camp at Katomi Kingdom Resort that imparted her with leadership skill. She also had an opportunity to be part of the Endev Summer Academy, which was an educative and empowering camp for her, because it helped her discover who she was, and also got information about energy plus she got inspiration from the women in energy, which helped her build her passion to work in the energy sector. His efforts together with the committee members saw the Association being registered and recognized entity. She also led a save environment save life campaign where a number of trees were planted in Ibaare village, Rugarama sub county Ntungamo district. She is a member of a piggery for poverty eradication project since 2017 that aims at eradicating poverty among fresh graduates. Medius worked with Century Bottling Company Limited (Coca Cola) in the ware house and logistics department Mbarara plant 2018 during her internship, where she gained experience and expertise in her line of study. She is a leader who served as chairperson and former speaker of Bwizibwera Parish Youth in Ntungamo district this helped her to influence the youth to positively change their behaviours. She was also a representative on scholars’ association for her student’s residence where she oriented and initiated new scholars into the scholars’ community and hostel as well, she was a Chair Lady Unicourts Catholic Community. Medius aspires to be a professor and she plans to achieve this by going for further studies. She also plans to construct an orphanage and expand her NGO of save orphans’ education foundation by seeking for donors and partners. Belinda’s challenges began in ordinary level when her father took over dependents from other families. His meager police salary could hardly make ends meet and Belinda found herself struggling through thick and thin to stay afloat. She however saw this as a motivation. After excelling at Primary Leaving Examinations with 9 aggregates at Ann Hill Universal Primary Education, she joined yet another Universal System of education at Ediofe High school where she scored 29 aggregates at Uganda Certificate of education. Thanks to BRAC scholarship, Belinda got to join East High Ntinda and finally complete Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education with 14 points. Belinda’s luck worked for her again when she was accepted on Mastercard Foundation Scholarship Program to study for Bachelor of Science in Quantitative Economics at Makerere University. This made her dream of becoming an aggressive statistician come true. She also believes that her professional status in the society will come in handy when she joins the fight to promote girl child education especially in rural areas.

Ronald graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Statistics from Makerere University. He was raised by a single mother whose main occupation is subsistence farming. His father passed away when he was seven years old leaving the family in complete poverty. This however, didn’t prevent Ronald from vigorously pursuing his education. Thanks to Buhinda Primary School’s bursary program, he completed Primary Leaving Examinations with 13 aggregates. Ronald’s luck was still in his favour when he was accepted at St Thomas Secondary School on its bursary scheme and he studied for Uganda Certificate of Education attaining 26 aggregates. He was again offered a bursary at St Mary’s Vocation Institute where he finally completed with 17 points at Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education. When Ronald was beginning to worry that his luck might have run out, Mastercard Scholarship Program came through for him and his dream of becoming a Bank Accountant will finally come true. With a belief of owing all his good fortune to God, he also plans to join his community Church’s effort in providing for the disadvantaged.

Rehema graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree with Education. She is the third born out of four siblings whose parents are both carpenters. Rehema did not have it easy while growing up especially when it came to academics. She was always missing classes due to delayed tuition payment, at times feeling threatened that she might have to miss examinations. She took every challenge that came her way with bravery assured that the end will justify the means. After struggling through Primary Leaving Examinations and achieving 12 aggregates, she went to Midfield Secondary School with the little that she could afford. Her score of 48 points at Uganda Certificate of Education left a lot desiring but she nevertheless lost hope. She later proceeded to Kampala Apostolic Secondary School under the school’s bursary scheme and studied for Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education at which she achieved 13 points. Because of her fondness for children, Rehema’s career aspiration is to become a motivating schoolteacher – an opportunity that she could have never met had it not been for Mastercard Foundation Scholarship Program. She also harbors a dream of setting up a project in her community that supports under privileged children.

Susan graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Health Sciences from Makerere University. Her mother, a petty trader struggled through thick and thin but she could hardly make ends meet especially when it came to education. However, Susan was never carried away by the challenges. She struggled to make sure that her mother’s hard work was not in vain by studying with resilience, as her hard work would later show. She excelled at Primary Leaving Examinations in the first grade with 10 aggregates and joined Gayaza High School where she excelled as well with 19 aggregates at Uganda Certificate of Education. Her resilience met with good luck when BRAC offered her a scholarship to study at St Mary’s College Kithende. She finally completed Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education with 14 points. Susan’s career aspiration is to become a disease researcher. She believes that this could never have been possible if it was not Mastercard Foundation Scholarship Program that came to her rescue. Her plan is to start up a project that aims at sensitizing her community to shift from curative health methods and embrace preventive health ways of living.

Enoch holds a Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Engineering from Makerere University. He was the 2017/2018 President of the Makerere University Agricultural and Bio systems engineering Students’ Association (MUABESA). This position shaped his leadership, interpersonal, managerial and public communication skills. He participated in summer leadership camps in 2016 and 2017 that were organized by the MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program at Makerere University where he obtained different skills such as Self-awareness, Design thinking, Stress and Time management, Team work and Community engagement. He has volunteered in various high schools as a Mathematics and Physics facilitator. Enoch has worked as a training engineer at Mwenge tea Estate and TONNET agro-engineering Company where he fully explored his engineering skills. Through this training, he acquired skills in crop irrigation, food processing, heavy electricity installation, design and fabrication of agro-processing machinery, agricultural machinery repair, maintenance and operation. He demonstrated entrepreneurial and creative mind-set and skills when he participated in the Carbon footprint challenge where he successfully advanced into the round of the top 25. With the skills and knowledge that he has acquired, Enoch is looking forward to making a contribution towards the mechanization of agriculture in Uganda and would like to work in the private sector as a Consultant in Agricultural Engineering.

Brian was the only child in the family who persisted against old odds to stay in school. Kibale Community Children’s Organisation supported Brian throughout his entire academic journey before university. He attended Kibale Community Primary School and scored 23 aggregates at Primary Leaving Examinations. He proceeded to St Mary’s College where he achieved 40 aggregates at Uganda Certificate of Education and completed Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education with 18 points. His career aspiration is to become a professional teacher and he has plans to become actively involved in charity organizations so that he can help reach out to theunderprivileged like himself.

Ikras holds a Bachelor’s of science degree in Business Statistics. He is a great leader with a heart for giving back to society as he served in different leadership positions and also participated in many community outreaches. Ikras is well equipped to kick start his career and has all the necessary skills to thrive based on the experience he has gained while at the university. Through internships and voluntary work, Ikras has acquired different skills and useful experience in the world of work. He worked with the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) under department of Research planning and development, Statistic Unit as an intern, where he was equipped with research skills, statistics and report writing. He also worked with PrintBoda as a Business development Analyst intern where he was involved in generating, entering and analysing online data for customers that helps the company to estimate and evaluate its sale. He is currently working with Safeboda as an Operations and Logistics Intern where he ensures that new app drivers are equipped with the necessary tech to use the SafeBoda mobile application and Identifying process improvements and efficiencies to the driver tech readiness process. Ikras underwent rigorous training in the field of statistics where he was equipped with a number of skills in using different software packages and also undertook research about the socio-economic factors influencing tea production by small holder tea farmers in Bushenyi. His career aspiration is to become a great data scientist and hopes to undertake a master’s degree to achieve this. He wants to work with Uganda Revenue Authority as a data scientist.

Shakira graduated with a Bachelor of Science gegreewith Education from Makerere University. Her mother is the sole breadwinner for the family. Shakira’s childhood dream was joining University, but the hopeless financial situation at home left her dream hanging in a balance. None of her elder siblings had gone beyond form four. Her face lit up when Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at Brac offered her a scholarship that took her to Masaka Secondary school for her A’ level. She excelled in her final exams in 2014; however, she was not sure if her dream of studying at University would become a reality. Indeed, Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at Makerere University made her dream a reality when they offered her a scholarship to join University. She is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. At the completion of the programme, she will come out a trained science teacher; she hopes to use her skills to change the community by reducing the high rate of school dropouts. She will achieve this guiding and counselling the youths. She also plans to go for a health profession to extend a wide range of services to people in her community. At Makerere University, Shakira is the sitting Vice Chairperson of the Education Science Investment Move (ESIM). She is forever indebted to Mastercard Foundation for turning around her life.

Moreen graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Medical Radiography from Makerere University. Her parents are both teachers, whose meagre income could not support all the children to go to school. Moreen was bailed out by a Scholarship from Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at Brac. She joined Mbale Secondary School for her ‘O’ Level and Trinity College Nabbingo for her ‘A’ Level. She excelled in her final exams in 2014 and joined Makerere University through another Scholarship by The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program at Makerere University. Today, she is pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Medical Radiography, and she aspires to use the skills and knowledge from her course for the benefit of people in her community. She is already a volunteer in the cleaning up of Mbale main hospital and visits children’s wards to offer help, where possible. She also sensitizes people regarding cancer, so that they can go for screening of the disease and get early treatment. She contends that not all this would have been possible without the generosity of Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at Brac and Makerere University.

Bridget graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Labaratoty Technology from Makerere University. Being the first born of the family, her life was filled with responsibilities of helping her mother look after her siblings by doing odd jobs around the village. This however did not back her down from purchasing her academic dream; if anything, it magnified her resilience. With some financial aid coming from her aunt, Bridget completed her Primary Leaving Examinations with 11 aggregates and proceeded to St Joseph’s Kiteredde Secondary School where she scored 24 aggregates at Uganda Certificate of Education. She then attended Masaka Secondary School and scored 17 points at Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education. Bridget’s sense of responsibility did not only stop at home, she was a head girl in her Ordinary Level School and went ahead to become a religious prefect in her Advanced Level School. Her career aspiration is to become a leading Laboratory Technician. She is passionate and has a lot of humility towards the elderly, her dream has always been to set up a free clinic in her community that caters especially for the sick and disadvantaged senior citizens. Jane graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Laboratory Technology at Makerere University. She is a qualified Medical Laboratory Technologist. She has two years’ experience practicing as a Medical Laboratory Technology. Through internships in different hospitals, she acquired skills and competences in running routine laboratory tests, quality assurance and control of test procedures and results, documentation and record keeping in the laboratory, procurement and inventory of laboratory materials, as well as explaining clinical significance of results. Over the last three years in the University she acquired skills in Hematology and blood transfusion, Histology and Histopathology, Microscopy, Microbiology and parasitology, among others. She attained these skills through internships in various credible health facilities like; Mulago National Referral hospital laboratory, Mulago Pharma genomics, Kampala Independent Hospital, Mengo hospital, Rubaga hospital, as well as Histology Lab at Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Makerere University. Janet holds a Bachelor of Science Biological at Makerere University, Majoring in Zoology. She is able to integrate her technical and creativity skills into the professional world where she will not only be able to contribute to its improved efficiency and profitability but will also be able to upgrade her skills and experience. During her stay at the university, she carried out internship with National Livestock Resources Research Institute (NaLIRRI) and also carried out Research on fall army worm with National Crop Resources Research Institute (NaCRRI). She also volunteered as an extension worker whereby together with her team, she helped farmers improve the productivity of their apiaries. Having trained in transformative leadership for a period of three years through summer leadership camps organized by Mastercard Foundation Scholarship Program at Makerere University, she was able to enroll as the Vice president Rukiga Students’ Association Makerere chapter (RUSA) for a two-term period. She led to the implementation a book project under the theme “Giving hope to the young generation,” where text books, mathematical sets and question banks were issued out to selected twelve different schools in Rukiga district. She also served as the deputy information minister for the Makerere University College of Natural Sciences Students Association (MUCONASSA). However, she was resilient and dedicated to make the best of the little that was available. From Good times Primary School where she excelled in the first degree with 7 aggregates, She struggled on to Makerere Secondary School where her dedication saw her excel again with 17 aggregates at Uganda Certificate of Education. As her hard work met with luck, she was offered a scholarship under BRAC and Veron finally have to complete Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education with 13 points. Her career prospect is to become a computer scientist majoring in networks. Dorothy graduated a Bachelor’s degree in Human Nutrition from Makerere University. Over the years, she honed leadership skills, she was the speaker of the Makerere University Human Nutrition Students’ Association-2018/2019. She was an Executive Committee member of the Inter-University Nutrition Students’ Association and the Class Representative of the Human Nutrition Class of 2020. She was part of the team that launched the first inter-university Nutrition Seminar at Makerere University that aimed at addressing the role of the youth in influencing nutrition policies and practices in the community. She also championed the organization of the 2019 Annual Nutrition Mobile Clinic in Kampala in collaboration with other Nutrition institutions. Joyce graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree with Education. All siblings except Joyce had to drop out of school because the parents could barely afford to raise funds to support their education. Joyce went to St Lawrence Migeera RC Primary School on the school’s Academic Bursary Program. With more luck being on her side, Joyce also secured a half bursary from Kabaka Education Fund while the parents paid for the other half and with that, she managed to go through secondary education at Trust Senior School Kyengera. Despite financial hardships, she was an active student who was the chairperson Scripture Union. She dreams of setting up schools in her community where she can actively join in the fight against illiteracy, which happens to be the biggest challenge they are facing.

Hasifah graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial and Fine Art, specializing in Advertising design, painting, and Fashion design. During her time at the University, she was heavily involved in everything art. Fashion designing is just part of her lifestyle. Over the last three years, she has gained experience and competence in fashion and design, having participated in a number fashion shows in and around Kampala as a Set Designer. She participated in KLAART18 (Kampala Art Festival) as Set Designer. She volunteered and helped local and international artists to explain their artworks to the people in different communities in and around Kampala, while working with 320 East | Ugandan Trust, a not for profit organisation, focused on the creation and exploration of contemporary art in Uganda. She was also part of the organizing committee for Kampala fashion Week KFW18 Team, where she volunteered and worked as a Set Designer during the show. In 2018, she participated in the CEDAT fashion show and MTSIFA fashion show as a designer, where she was given an opportunity to showcase some of her designs, which mesmerized the audience. She was selected to be one the professional female artists who represented Uganda to work with ARTOLUTION, an international art organization which impacts people through Art. Hasifah’s career aspiration is to become a professional fashion designer and painter; a dream that was brought to reality by Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program. She also aspires to start a Foundation in her community that is dedicated to providing scholastic assistance to the needy children.

During her stay at the University, she underwent a fashion and design training that equipped her with skills that have enabled her to currently work on a project aiming at tailoring skills development, especially among homemakers and school dropouts in my home area under the area of fashion and design. She has relative experience in the world of work, having had an internship training with Ministry of Trade Industry and Cooperatives, under the Department of Business Skills Training and Development. Using the skills attained, she is the brains behind the initiation of a community project geared towards tailoring skills development among the unemployed women in my community that has enabled housewives and school dropouts attain skills for earning a living and saving towards creation of a business. As Business Administration Scholar interested in fashion and design and hairdressing, she is aspiring to become the best fashion designer and hair stylist. She was working towards opening up a one-stop fashion and design shop. This will start as a small African craft shop, which I will develop over time through re-investment of profits, submission of business proposals to potential business partners and investors for funding and undergoing more formal training in Fashion and Design and salon. Her career aspiration is to become an interpreter and always be able to teach or motivate other women into the practice. This could have never been possible for Betty had she not been told about Mastercard Foundation Scholarship Program.

Rose graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Sciences, majoring in Gender and Women Studies at Makerere University. As a Mastercard Foundation Scholar, she showed a lot of commitment in community engagement and strong passion to work with the youth and NGO’s whose work is dedicated to HIV/AIDs prevention and women empowerment. Her key highlights on the Scholars Program included travelling to Johannesburg, South Africa to attend the Baobab summit and being part of Pearl of Africa Summer School. Rose’s passion for leadership was demonstrated through her service as the Class Coordinator, Speaker for the School of Women and Gender studies, Health Minister of MISH hostel and a Peer Mentor to her class. She has relative work experience, having had internship experience with Rakai Health Sciences Program. The experience enabled her to work and interact with different people, including those living with HIV/AIDs, drug addicts, people with disabilities, and the youth. This enabled her to enhance her skills in adaptability, resilience, teamwork and communication. In her final year, she came up with the Golokoka Yaka Tomato processing project, which was one of the competing projects for seed funding. Apart from being a recognized Businessperson in Uganda, she aspires to start up an orphanage as a way of giving back to her community. She worked on projects dealing with community mobilization and empowerment where she acquired skills in developing project proposals and budgets with a gender perspective. She also gained some knowledge and experience on mainstreaming gender into plans and programs. She was among the few volunteers who were selected based on competence to writing training reports as well as minutes of stakeholders’ meetings which roles she took on with confidence and produced quality work with minimum supervision. She is interested in monitoring and evaluation tailored with research, her best hobbies are listening to music, playing netball and reading books. Apart from her dream of becoming an exemplary teacher, Irene also dreams of joining the community church not only in assisting the needy, but also in sensitizing the community about the benefits of education.

She loved to go to school at an early age, despite growing up in an environment that did not support girl child education. Lack of resources in her peasantry family just compounded her problems. However, because her determination to acquire education, Justine, touched the hearts of many individuals and charity organisations, thus she supported her to go to school right from her primary School up to her lower secondary level of education. When all hope was waning of furthering her education, lady luck smiled at her when she securedMastercard Foundation Scholarship at BRAC-Uganda, which enabled her to complete the two years of high school. She excelled in her final exams, unfortunately, she could not secure a government scholarship to join university. As she contemplated the way forward, lady luck was at again, she secured another Mastercard Foundation Scholarship through the Scholars Program at Makerere University. Having been raised by subsistence farmers, Justine knew right from an early age, how important the agriculture sector was in Africa, therefore she chose to study a Bachelors in Agriculture and Rural Innovation. She hopes to use the knowledge to change the lives of people in her community and the country at large through teaching them new and modern methods of farming. Although her academic journey was challenging due to poverty, Franklin never succumbed but rather faced the challenges head on. With the little that her parents managed to scratch from the farm, she managed to attend Kamuganguzi Universal Primary School and emerge with 12 aggregates at Primary Leaving Examinations. She then proceeded to Kigezi High School and studied relentlessly to attain 29 aggregates at Uganda Certificate of Education. I volunteered in a non-profit youth-led organization called AIESEC and I had an opportunity to be leader in the Makerere chapter which grew my self-confidence and selfawareness. MCF gave me an opportunity to give back to the community through the different activities organized to visit marginalized communities. I’m passionate about art and design so I decided to invest in myself with the stipend I was receiving to buy books on Amazon about knitting and crocheting and watch YouTube videos too. Now, I am a selftaught knitter and crocheter and I want to reach out to youth in my community and skill them with these techniques, to empower them to start making items they can sell and earn an honest living. Though I am currently working at Exquisite Solutions, Namanve as a Transcriptionist, I knit and crotchet in free time and I have earned handsomely from it. She also has a plan to build an entrepreneurship empire in a bid to cub down poverty and unemployment in her community.

Jolly is the second born out of four siblings whose father passed away before she could barely remember. She was brought up by her a mother- a subsistence farmer who also passed on just as Jolly finished her advanced level of education. However, she did not give up even when it meant to be sent away from school for defaulting on dues at least four times in a term. Shirah is an Accounts Assistant at Roko Construction Limited. In pursuit of her career and passion for accounting, she is undertaking CPA Level, now at 2. She has been privileged to intern with two organizations; firstly with the Ministry of Local Government and lastly the Planning and Development Department (PDD) of Makerere University directly working with the MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program in the recruitment and internship evaluation as core activities of the Scholars Program. Makerere offered her grounds to exercise her leadership skills as a Class Representative, Finance minister, MasterCard Scholars’ Council Representative, and Treasurer of Lions club. MasterCard Scholars Program opened doors for her to meet other African scholars across the globe with very strong desires to transform the African continent. She kept the desire burning and co-founded Rabbits for Education, a social venture promoting primary education in Kabuga primary school, Kamwenge District. She received the Resolution Project Fellowship Award in Rwanda for the social enterprise. She admits that her love for the community, give back and social entrepreneurship has then grown stronger, been enriched and fuelled by Mastercard and her partner organizations like The Resolution Project. Jolly graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Development Economics. While both parents were working, they still experienced financial constraint, because their income was painfully low. However, the little that they could squeeze managed to support Jolly through Primary and Ordinary Level Education. Jolly embraced the small opportunities she had and excelled with 8 aggregates at Primary Leaving Examination and 28 aggregates at Uganda Certification of Education. Thanks to BRAC Scholarship, she joined St Lawrence Horizon Campus where she soared with 16 points at Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education. Her dream came true when she was accepted on Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program and she can now pursue her prospect of transforming her community using the little resources they have through sensitization. She believes there is a lot of marketing and business potential in her society but the lack of professionalism is what keeps them impoverished.

Nsanzimana Janvier comes from Gastibo District in Eastern Rwanda studying for Bachelor of Library and Information Sciences. He’s the fifth born of ten siblings being raised by a single mother who could barely afford basic needs for the family on her subsistence farming occupation. Even while attending public schools, Janvier could hardly access funds for scholastic materials. However, all the hardships that he had to go through only served as a purpose to push him further. After scoring 43 aggregates in Primary Leaving Examinations, he proceeded to karangazi Secondary School where 9 aggregates at Ordinary Level Examinations and completed Advanced Level Education with 40 points. His dream has always been to obtain undergraduate education and thanks to Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program, his dream came true. His career prospect is to become a successful librarian and to open up one of the biggest and most productive libraries in his community.

Louis Marie Pursued a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration at Makerere University majoring in entrepreneurship. Jane holds a Bachelor of Science in Ethnobotany. She is very well equipped with all the skills, knowledge and experience she needs to thrive in her career. She worked with natural chemotherapeutics research institute (NCRI) and royal plants and nurseries as an intern where she gained drug development skills, after which she decided to start developing a herbal drug for breast cancer. However, this project needed a lot of research so she put it on hold until she finishes her bachelor’s degree. She also worked as an ethnobotanical research assistant in with one of her professors in 2017, during the documentation of medicinal plants used to treat various diseases. In 2018, they still worked together during the documentation of medicinal plants used by pregnant mothers and babies. This research is likely to yield a publication. Aside from all this, she has great leadership skills as she was the representative of her class among other various positions she held while at the university, and also participated in various community outreaches organized by the scholarship foundation. Currently, she is developing a project about managing menstrual cramps through production of an anti-menstrual cramps herbal drug. In her career path as an ethnobotanical researcher and herbalist, she aspires to become one of the greatest pharmacologists this nation has ever had and hopes to pursue a master’s degree if she ever gets the chance. Her career prospective is to become professional medical worker. She believes that with this will help her fulfill her lifelong dream to improve on the poor medical services in her community.

Winfred graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Work and Social Administration. Her parents passed on at a her tender age, leaving her under the guardianship of her uncle who is a civil servant. Aside from the trauma of losing both parents at a tender age, Winfred’s life was filled with challenges due to poverty. She had to walk a long distance to reach school but when she reached, she poured all her troubles and dedicated herself to studying. Her score of 8 aggregates at Primary Leaving Examinations was excellent enough to get her into Bishop Cyprian Secondary School. She then studied even harder and achieved 22 aggregates at Uganda Certificate of Education and 17 points at Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education. Because of the trials and triumph that Winfred has experienced, her dream job is to become an inspiring social worker with most of her focus dedicated to counseling the disadvantaged and depressed. She undertook an internship with the external trade department of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives which enabled her to gain exposure in the field of economics. The experience she got motivated her to carry out research on how trading blocks promote suitable economic growth and development. She has honed leadership skills during her stay in the University. She was a publicity secretary for Procurement Students Association at the University. I have passion for the marginalized girls, women and victimized communities, people that are living in unfavourable conditions, not because they chose to, but because they are victims of circumstances for instance war, poverty, rape and defilement. I would love to use my expertise in procurement, logistics and supply chains to contribute towards improving the livelihood of such people. I intend to work with humanitarian agencies such as World Food Programme and in refugee camps, with disaster and hunger stricken areas, with teenage mothers trying to bring back hope to them through involving them in income generating activities and advocating for their entry back to school. Sam graduated with a Bachelor of Science degreein Mechanical Engineering from Makerere University.The fifth among six children, he was a happy child until his father passed away in 2004, leaving him and his siblings in the hands of a single mother. Life took a twist for Sam and his siblings. The mother could not cope with the demands of being the family head; later on pay all the school fees for her children. Sam’s education journey hang in a balance at this point. While he was completing his ordinary level at Aduku Secondary School, his mother fell ill, so she could not afford to pay the school fees. He was able to sit his final exams at the mercies of his Head teacher. The hope of furthering his education and attain his engineering dream,  was restored when Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at Brac offered him a Scholarship to attend ‘A’ Level from St. Mary´s College, Lugazi. He excelled in his final exams with 17 points in Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry. He was then offered another Scholarship by Mastercard Foundation at Makerere University. Angelina graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Laboratory Technology. Her life was filled with many challenges one of which is that she lost her father when she was barely a month-old-baby. She was left in the care of her mother who struggled with her peasantry occupation but could hardly make ends meet. Not all the difficulties that Angelina went through were enough tokeep her from vehemently pursuing a brighter life through education. Her score of 6 aggregates at Primary Leaving Examinations was exceptionally excellent. Her hard work could have gone in vain had it not been Compassion International Organisation that offered her a scholarship at Kisoro Vision Secondary School where she studied for Uganda Certificate of Education and achieved 21 aggregates. Thanks to the scholarship from BRAC, Angelina joined St Lawrence Citizen Crown City Campus and finally completed Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education with 13 points. While growing up, Angelina witnessed many substandard laboratory services, which is why her career prospective is to become an exemplary laboratory technician. She cannot be glad enough that Mastercard Foundation Scholarship Program offered her an opportunity to study at Makerere University and become model to her community.

With the little money she earned, she enrolled him in a nearby primary school where he started his academic journey. Dissan completed primary education from St Jude Primary School, Lukaya. After the death of his father in 2009, he went to Wagwa High School for his ‘O’ level on a school bursary. He then attended Masaka Secondary School for his ‘A’ level underthe support of The MasterCard Foundation scholarship at Brac. Dissan is now a first year Nursing student at Makerere University College of Health Sciences with support from The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program, Dissan is realising his potential of being an efficient health worker. He  has used his pocket money to help his elder brother register for his second semester this year at Makerere University.He cannot wait to be a professional health worker and extend quality health services to his community irrespective of social class. Umar graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering. Due heavy financial burden on the shoulders of a single mother, Umar’s academic journey nearly came to a halt. I had another give back and interaction with the youth & the elderly in Abim district (2018). The general give back organized for and by the entire team of the MCF scholars. School practice (Kasangati High School 4th June- 10th Aug 2018). I wrote a projects for funding modern construction material (block laying) & Milk processing (2019) I attended/ participated in the psychosocial support workshops organized by PITMCF. I was a class representative for all the Kiswahili course units for the two years. With that I gained a very good experience in the leadership position and owned certificate. I plan to start some business in the village after identifying the business opportunities and acquiring sufficient start-up capital alongside teaching as my profession. Her dream has always been to contribute towards building young minds. Carl is the younger of two siblings raised by a single mother who operates a small restaurant. Her father passed away while she was a three-month-old baby. Carl’s trauma of never knowing her father was never made easier by the immense poverty that the family was going through. This however did not deter her from vigorously purchasing an education and attaining 9 aggregates at Primary Leaving Examination. With support from well-wishers, she joined Bweranyangi Girls Secondary School where she scored 26 aggregates at Uganda Certificate of Education. Financial challenges became tighter at Advanced Level but thanks to BRAC, she managed to complete with 13 points at Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education. Her career aspiration is to become a better teacher than any of her teachers so that she can have a significant impact on students’ minds. Patience graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce. She is the last born of four siblings whose mother is a subsistence farmer. Patience’s financial woes began when her father passed away in her last class of Primary Seven. Under immense trauma, she completed with 11 aggregates; a score that only highlighted her perseverance. She was then offered a scholarship from Meeting Point Organisation to study at St Henry’s Secondary School where she obtained 30 aggregates at the Uganda Certificate of Education. Good luck not letting her down, she was offered a bursary from BRAC to study at Our Lady of Africa Secondary School and she finally completed Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education with 14 points. Being an underprivileged student did not keep Patience from practicing her leadership skills. She was a class monitor in primary school and the secretary of Writers Club in secondary school. Like her name, Patience’s patience paid off when Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program gave her the opportunity to pursue her dream of becoming a professional Accountant. She believes that an undergraduate degree will give her a better chance to influence financial management at a community-based level.

Marie Josee is an international Scholar from Rwanda, pursuing Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Laboratory Technology. She is an orphan and the last born of fivesiblings, two of whom died shortly after the parents passed away in 1994 and 2000 respectively, leavingthe three surviving siblings in the care of their elderly grandfather. Through a lot of financial hardship, Joseeattended a government school in her primary. In ‘O’ level, she attended a public school and the little moneythat was needed for school requirements was offered by Forum for African Women Educationist (FAWE) Rwanda. She excelled at ‘O’ level and was offered an ‘A’ Level sponsorship from Imbuto Non-Profit Foundation founded by Rwanda’s first lady Her Excellency Mrs. Jeannette Kagame. While in secondary school, she was the coordinator of French Club. Having lost all hope for further education after colleges failed to accept her on Government Sponsorship, Josee moved to Kigali town where she secured a job as a housemaid until luck came her way much later when she was accepted on the MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program. Her dream is to help her remaining siblings and community out of poverty one by one and through her work as medical personnel, she plans to help her society in fighting epidemics as well as disease control and awareness.
